The 1957 Simply Heavenly Original Broadway Cast Recording is coming to Masterworks Broadway on 10/14!
Harlem renaissance poet Langston Hughes wrote the musical Simply Heavenly based on his novel Simple Takes a Wife and Other Simple Stories. The story follows Jess Simple who is attempting to raise enough money for a divorce so he can marry his new love in ’50s Harlem. It eloquently captures the color, humor, and poetry of Harlem in the ’50s. The musical starred Claudia McNeil and Melvin Stewart. With music by David Martin, Simply Heavenly was originally produced for the Off-Broadway 85th Street Playhouse. On August 20th 1957, the show transferred to Broadway’s Playhouse Theatre.
