Happy 45th Anniversary to the Broadway cast and crew of 70, Girls, 70!
To celebrate we are revisiting pictures released from the Masterworks Broadway Vault. After the tremendous success of their 1966 musical noir, Cabaret, which was followed in quick succession by The Happy Time and Zorba (both in 1968), John Kander and Fred Ebb decided to take a break; they concocted this delightful musical, based on the play “Breath Of Spring” by Peter Coke, already a source for the British film “Make Mine Mink,” about a group of elderly citizens who form a gang and steal furs. While the show was not a critical or audience favorite (it opened on April 15, 1971, at the Broadhurst and ran for only 35 performances), it still ranks as one of the most enjoyable in the team’s canon, with fun performances from its cast, led by Mildred Natwick and Hans Conried, as the two over-the-hill gang leaders.
