At The Movies: Filmed Versions of Staged Shows #MusicalMonday
The trip of musicals from Broadway to Hollywood often results in a few surprises – screen stars of the first magnitude (even those not known for their singing talents) inhabit roles that theatergoers might have identified with celebrated stage personalities, some songs are eliminated while others are being added, and, generally speaking, the cinematic format itself allows for a bigger presentation of familiar shows. Characteristic of these tendencies, this week’s playlist offers big stars (Catherine Zeta-Jones, Sophia Loren, Natalie Wood, Elizabeth Taylor), new songs specifically written for the movie versions of beloved musicals (Loving You, Mein Herr, Bye Bye Birdie), and big screen renditions of familiar tunes (“Let Me Entertain You,” “Jubilation T. Cornpone,” “Send In The Clowns”). If there was any doubt… that’s entertainment, too! Listen here.
