Hailing from Victor, Montana, actor and singer Tom Hewitt is the creator of Broadway’s Dracula in the 2004 Wildhorn musical. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1981, having studied in the university’s Professional Theatre Training Program. His early stage work took him to the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, where he appeared in Noël Coward’s haunted comedy Blithe Spirit and David Hare’s Racing Demon, a play that critically examines the Church of England. Hewitt also performed at the Arena Stage in Washington, DC, in Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya and the Berkshire Theatre Festival in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where he played in Coward’s country-house romp Hay Fever.
By the 1990s he was appearing regularly on Broadway, first in Wendy Wasserstein’s 1993 play The Sisters Rosensweig, in which he stepped in to play Geoffrey Duncan. In a 1995 revival of Sheridan’s classic comedy of manners The School for Scandal, Hewitt played Charles Surface. He stepped in to play Scar in the long-running musical The Lion King and, in 1998, was an understudy in Yasmina Reza’s play Art.
In the new millennium Hewlitt enjoyed increased visibility on stage. At the Circle in the Square Theatre in 2000, Hewitt had a leading role in a revival of The Rocky Horror Show playing the “sweet transvestite” Frank ’N’ Furter. Then, in a 2002 revival of Rodgers and Hart’s The Boys from Syracuse, he starred as one of the identical twins who cause so much confusion and give rise to so much comedy.
In the original Broadway production of Frank Wildhorn’s Dracula, the Musical (2004), Hewitt starred as the blood-addicted vampire, a part he had already made his own in workshop and regional performances. He appeared recently on Broadway in Chicago, stepping in to play the skirt-chasing lawyer Billy Flynn.
His other regional and touring work has included Urinetown, Doctor Dolittle, Zhivago, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Private Lives, Travesties, and Peter Pan. Off-Broadway credits include Jeffery, Beau Jest, Richard III, and Othello. He has also performed on Law & Order and All My Children, as well as the Julie Taymor television film Fool’s Fire.
