Greg Kotis, a New York-based playwright, wrote the book and the lyrics for one of the more distinctive musicals to hit Broadway in many years, Urinetown. As Bruce Weber wrote in his New York Times review of the show:
”Urinetown makes a laughing, grandiose case for its own lack of grandiosity; not only does it poke fun at itself, but it also pokes fun at poking fun at itself. It’s a satisfied smirk of a show. No matter how satiric, referential and allegorical the story suggests itself to be, it is fundamentally an extended bathroom joke.”
Kotis won two Tonys® in 2002 for Urinetown – one for Best Book of a Musical, the other for Best Musical Original Score. He also earned two Drama Desk nominations in the same categories.
Greg Kotis earned his degree in political science at the University of Chicago and later turned to theater and both player and playwright with the Chicago theater group, the Neo-Futurists.
