A long-time player on the British stage and screen – she made her movie debut in 1938 – Glynis Johns won a Tony® for Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Desiree Armfeldt in the original 1973 Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music. The song, “Send in the Clowns,” was written specifically for her and became the best-known piece from the show.
Though skilled as a pianist and trained as a dancer, Johns’s Broadway appearances have otherwise been limited to stage plays. She made her Broadway debut in 1952 in the title role of Enid Bagnold’s comedy, Gertie.
