Flower Drum Song (1958) Photos Released from the #MWBVault
Based on The Flower Drum Song, the 1957 novel by C.Y. Lee, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Flower Drum Song had a homespun exoticism that recalled the team’s previous success, The King and I, set this time around in more familiar grounds, San Francisco. Still, the new show exuded the same age-old conflict between the generations and between different lifestyles, which provided the backdrop for the story of a Chinese mail-order bride and the man she came to America to marry, a nightclub owner with no desire to settle down. The musical, premiered at the St. James on December 1, 1958.
