Instantly recognizable by her signature overbite, Annie Golden (b. 19 October 1951, Brooklyn, New York) first took to the stage as a rock singer, most notably fronting a band known as The Shirts in New York’s legendary CBGB’s in the late 1970s. In 1977, Golden made her Broadway debut as Mother in the revival of Galt MacDermot’s musical Hair: The American Tribal Love Rock Musical. She reprised the role two years later in Milos Forman’s film adaptation of the work, and again in 2004 in a special benefit concert.
Annie Golden played the title role of Carrie in a workshop production of a musical based on the Stephen King novel, but the show never reached Broadway. She appeared as herself in the 1985 Broadway musical revue, Leader of the Pack, a mash-up of songs from the early 1960s by Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry, Phil Spector, Tony Powers, George “Shadow” Morton, Jeff Kent and Ellen Foley. Golden returned to Broadway in 1988 to play Belle in the revival of the stage comedy, Ah, Wilderness!, and in 1990 she played the role of Squeaky Fromme in Stephen Sondheim’s original off-Broadway production of Assassins.
In the early 1990s, she was part of a singing duo with Frank Carillo; together they released three albums: Fire in Newtown, Toxic Emotion, and Back for More.
In 1998, she returned to Broadway as Lucy Schmeeler in the revival of On the Town, and in 2000, she originated the role of Georgie Bukatinsky in the hit musical adaptation of The Full Monty. Golden later was a standby for the two comic villain roles, Calliope/Aphrodite and Melpomene/Medusa, in the successful Broadway adaptation of Xanadu (2007).
Among her nearly thirty movies so far are I Love You Phillip Morris (2009), Adventures of Power (2008), Brooklyn Rules (2007), Temptation (2004), It Runs in the Family (2003), The American Astronaut (2001), Barriers (1998), One Way Out (1996), Strictly Business (1991), Longtime Companion (1989), Forever, Lulu (1987), and Desperately Seeking Susan (1985). On television, she has had recurring roles on Miami Vice, Cheers, and Third Watch, and most recently has been appearing in the television musical comedy series, Wiener and Wiener.
