Born in Melrose, Massachusetts, just outside Boston, Marcia Lewis is a singer and actress who has been on Broadway, appeared in such popular television series as The Bob Newhart Show, and performed in many of Manhattan’s most celebrated clubs and cabaret venues. Lewis made her Broadway debut as the replacement for Ernestina in the original Broadway production of Jerry Herman’s musical, Hello, Dolly!, in 1966.
After working in television during the 1970s, Marcia Lewis returned to Broadway as a replacement to Miss Hannigan in the original production of Martin Charnin and Charles Strouse’s musical, Annie. In 1987, she earned a Tony® nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Rachel Halpern in the short-lived Strouse and Schwartz musical, Rags. That same year, Lewis appeared as Madame Katz in the Gilbert Becaud/Julian More musical drama, Roza.
Marcia Lewis appeared in various Broadway revivals in the 1990s – as Golde in the 1990 revival of Fiddler on the Roof; as Miss Lynch in the 1994 revival of Grease, by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey; and as the Matron in the 1996 revival of the Kander and Ebb hit musical, Cabaret.
Lewis was nominated for a Drama Desk award for her role in Rags, a Tony® for her performance in Grease, and both a Tony® and a Drama Desk award for her Matron in Cabaret.
